The Basics of Securing Your Small Business Network
You don't need an enterprise budget. You need segmentation, patching, backups you've actually restored, and multi-factor everywhere.
Small business security fails in predictable ways: a flat network, shared passwords, unpatched edge devices and backups nobody has ever restored from. Fix those four and you have eliminated most of the realistic attack paths against you.
Segmentation is the highest-leverage change. Guests, cameras, point-of-sale and staff workstations should not share one broadcast domain. A modest managed switch and a firewall with real VLAN support cover most small sites.
Multi-factor authentication on email and remote access is non-negotiable. The overwhelming majority of small business compromises we're called into start with a credential, not an exploit.
Finally, test the restore. A backup that has never been recovered is a hypothesis, not a safeguard. Put it on the calendar quarterly and document who did it.
