Structured Cabling 101: Why Your Cable Infrastructure Matters

Structured cabling is the standards-based plant that everything else plugs into: pathways, horizontal runs, patch panels, terminations and labeling. It is the longest-lived part of any network and the most expensive to redo.

Good plant is boring on purpose. Consistent categories, tested and certified runs, sensible bend radii, service loops, and labels that match the documentation. Every one of those decisions is a favor to whoever opens the rack in ten years.

Fiber deserves particular care. Pull more strands than you need today — the labor, not the glass, is the expense — and terminate in a way that lets capacity grow without opening walls again.

The test-and-document step is where corners get cut and where problems hide. Insist on certification results and an as-built you can actually read.
